MBBS Abroad: What Indian Students Should Know About Georgia and Uzbekistan

By Zubair Muttoon

Studying Medicine Abroad Is a Major Decision For a student dreaming of becoming a doctor, choosing a medical university abroad can be one of the biggest decisions the family makes. Georgia and Uzbekistan are among the destinations considered by Indian students looking at overseas medical education. However, MBBS abroad should never be chosen simply because of an attractive advertisement or tuition fee. For Indian students who intend to practise medicine in India later, regulatory compliance is critical. Why Students Explore Georgia Georgia has developed a visible international medical education sector and attracts students from different countries. For Indian students, factors such as English-medium medical programmes at certain universities, an international student environment and exposure to a different healthcare and cultural setting can make Georgia worth exploring. However, universities and programmes can differ substantially. Each programme must therefore be evaluated individually. Why Students Explore Uzbekistan Uzbekistan has also become a destination considered by Indian medical aspirants. Students may encounter various universities, programme structures and fee levels, but the same rule applies: do not assume that every medical programme offered to international students satisfies Indian regulatory requirements. In fact, the National Medical Commission issued an alert specifically concerning Indian students seeking undergraduate medical admission in Uzbekistan in April 2026, emphasising the need for due diligence. National Medical Commission NMC Compliance Comes First This is the most important part for an Indian student. Under the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate framework, students need to ensure that their foreign medical education satisfies the applicable requirements. NMC's April 2026 advisory highlights key requirements including a minimum 54 months of medical education in a single institution, followed by a 12-month internship at the same foreign university. It also states that clinical training should not be split across different countries and that the medium of instruction must be English. National Medical Commission Students should check the latest NMC regulations and advisories before admission, not after completing the degree. Returning to Practise in India Completing a foreign medical degree does not by itself provide automatic registration to practise medicine in India. NMC states that foreign undergraduate medical qualifications for Indian/OCI candidates are governed by the applicable foreign medical graduate and screening-test regulations. The current NMC information says eligible candidates must qualify the relevant FMG examination conducted by NBEMS and complete the applicable registration/internship requirements. National Medical Commission Because regulations can change during a student's long medical education journey, students should always refer to the latest official NMC and NBEMS notifications. Georgia or Uzbekistan — Which One Is Better? There is no responsible one-word answer. The correct comparison is not simply: Georgia vs Uzbekistan. It should be: University + programme + curriculum + clinical training + regulatory compliance + cost + student environment + individual suitability. A strong university option in one country may be more suitable for a particular student than another institution in the other country. Questions Every Family Should Ask Before paying any admission fee, students and parents should confirm: - Is the programme compliant with current NMC requirements applicable to the student? - Is the complete medical programme taught in English? - Where will clinical training take place? - Where will the required internship be completed? - What is the total course duration? - Is the qualification recognised for medical registration in the country where it is awarded? - What are the complete tuition and living costs? - What student accommodation and support are available? - What happens if regulations or programme structures change? These questions are more important than promotional claims. Make the Decision Carefully Medicine is a long-term professional commitment. Choosing an overseas medical university deserves considerably more research than simply comparing tuition fees. Students should understand the university, academic programme, clinical pathway and Indian regulatory requirements before making their final decision. Vista Learners supports students and families in exploring international medical education options, understanding the application journey and making a more informed university choice. For the regulatory portion, I would also add a small line at the bottom of the live article: Medical education and licensing regulations may change. Students should verify the latest requirements directly with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other relevant authorities before taking admission.
